Privacy Policy for Citation Extension
1. Introduction
Citation Extension ("we", "us", or "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and disclose information when you use our Chrome extension.
2. Information We Collect
We do not collect any personal information, and we operate no servers of our own. Citation Extension does not transmit any usage data, demographic information, browser type, or analytics to us.
Citations you save are stored locally in your browser (chrome.storage.local) and never leave your device except when you explicitly export them.
When you use the optional identifier lookup (DOI / ISBN / title) or when the extension checks whether an article has been retracted, the identifier you provide is sent to public metadata services — Crossref and Open Library — to fetch the corresponding citation. Only that identifier is sent; no personal information is included. If you do not use lookup, no such requests are made.
3. How We Use Information
Since we do not collect any information, no data is used, stored, or shared. All citation formatting is performed locally in your browser.
4. Permissions Requested
Our extension requests host permissions for specific academic sites (PubMed, Google Scholar) solely to read citation information from those pages and format it for your clipboard. This data is processed locally and is never stored or transmitted.
5. Data Security
We store no data on our own servers, so there is no central data at risk. Saved citations live only in your browser's local storage. Lookup and retraction-check requests are made directly from your browser to Crossref and Open Library over HTTPS.
6. Third-Party Services
To resolve identifiers and detect retractions, the extension queries Crossref (api.crossref.org) and Open Library (openlibrary.org). These requests contain only the DOI, ISBN, or title you are looking up and are subject to those services' own privacy policies. We share no other information with any third party.
7. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify users of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page. You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes.
8. Contact Us
